Italy has been renowned for its fashion, not only because Italians dress well on a daily basis, but Italy is also the birth country of some of the most exquisite brands known today such as Gucci, Prada, Versace, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Valentino, and others. In this country of such refined taste, you can also find one of the few fashion capitals in the world, Milan.
Our Fashion courses are predominantly practical, requiring students to have a more hands-on approach than a theoretical one. In the Fashion Design course, the students will learn how to get in touch with their creativity by designing different garments and pieces on paper using materials that will be provided. At the end of the course, students will also get to take home a portfolio of all their work. In the Tailoring course, the students will first learn how to sew and stitch by hand and later with a sewing machine. Once learned, the students will have some projects such as making pouches and aprons, while eventually getting to make more complex things like entire outfits.
Both of these courses go hand in hand, and therefore are recommended to be taken at the same time. The reason behind this is because in the third quarter, you will be making in tailoring what you have designed in the fashion course.
For all of our art courses, there is NO requirement of previous knowledge or experience. Each class is taught in an environment that is friendly to beginners but also helps to further develop those skills of more experienced students.
NOTE: ALL COURSE CREDITS ARE IN QUARTER HOURS, WHICH 3 QUARTER HOURS TRANSLATES TO 1 SEMESTER HOUR
Our fine arts and history courses provide students with an in-depth understanding of Italian history and art through both hands-on and analytical learning methods.
ART 321 | (2, 2, 2 QH)
This course covers the basics of fashion illustration, draping, sewing, and simple pattern making. Students will learn how to draw and color the fashion figure and the various articles of clothing from models and fashion photos, how to drape muslins on a model form and develop basic bodices, skirts, sleeves, etc., how to make paper patterns, the steps to designing a collection and finally to have the opportunity to produce a garment of their choice. A minimum of five students is required.
ART / HMEC 315 | (1, 1, 1 QH)
From stitching to pattern drawing, this course focuses on the intricacies of tailoring. Designed as a hands-on course, much of the learning experience will be done through practical means, such as hand stitching, fabric and thread selection, and pattern making. Projects for this course will range from partial to full garment production.
